Ever since a tea merchant in Kyoto experimented in 1920 with roasting leftover green tea leaves over charcoal, hojicha (houjicha) has been cherished throughout Japan and across all generations for its soothing, nutty aroma and warm, mild flavor. For some time now, hojicha has become an absolute trend drink alongside matcha. Of course, we couldn’t keep this from you: Hojicha has been available in our cafés since the beginning of the year and is now also available for home use in our online shop.

This organic Hojicha is imported in powder form directly from Kagoshima. It’s perfect for making a delicious cup of Hojicha latte or pure Hojicha. Hojicha is prepared just like Matcha: with your favorite milk or just water, whichever you prefer.  We also like to add a little maple syrup to our Hojicha Latte—for the perfect feel-good drink.

Thanks to its high L-theanine content combined with low caffeine levels, Hojicha has a relaxing and calming effect. Acidity and caffeine content are reduced through the roasting process, so you can enjoy Hojicha at any time of day.

By the way, many Japanese people traditionally drink hojicha in the evening and also enjoy it after meals, as it is so easy to digest.
